오늘은 추수감사주일로 지킨다. 미국에서 추수감사절의 유래가 된 청교도들의 감사는 대단한 감사이다. 1620년 9월 6일, 102명의 영국의 청교도들(성도들)이 신앙의 자유를 찾아 메이플라워호를 타고 3개월의 긴 항해 끝에, 미국 동부에 있는 플리머스(MS)에 도착했다.

Today is Thanksgiving Sunday. The gratitude of the Puritans, who became the origin of Thanksgiving Day in the United States, is a great gratitude. On September 6, 1620, 102 English Puritans(Saints) boarded the Mayflower in search of religious freedom and arrived in Plymouth(MS) in the eastern United States after a long 3-month voyage.

항해 중, 첫 겨울을 지내며 거의 절반이 죽었다. 첫 농사도 너무 빈약했다. 하지만 그들은 부족한 가운데 이듬해 1621년 하나님께 감사제사를 드렸다. 이것이 기원이 되어 1789년부터 국가적으로 추수감사절을 지내게 되었다. During the voyage, almost half of them died during the first winter. The first crop was also very poor. However, despite the shortage, they offered a sacrifice of thanks to God the following year in 1621. This became the origin of Thanksgiving Day, which was celebrated nationally in 1789.

그들은 감사드릴 수 없는 상황 속에서 감사예배를 드렸다. 청교도들은 강풍과 눈보라, 추위, 질병과 식량 부족, 원주민들의 적대 등을 경험했다. 그 추운 겨울, 추위를 막아줄 집조차없이 겨울을 지냈다. 그해 겨울 동안 102명의 청교도 중 약 절반 이상이 죽었으며, 나머지도 지치고 건강이 쇠약해지고, 질병으로 고생을 했다.

They held a service of thanksgiving in a situation where they could not be thankful. The Pilgrims experienced strong winds, snowstorms, cold, disease, food shortages, and hostility from the natives. They spent the winter without even a house to protect them from the cold. During that winter, more than half of the 102 Pilgrims died, and the rest were exhausted, debilitated, and suffered from disease.

봄이 찾아왔을 때, 살아남은 청교도들은 땅을 개간하고, 씨를 뿌리고, 잘 가꾸어 1621년, 가을 처음으로 수확을 하게 된다. When spring came, the surviving Pilgrims cleared the land, sowed seeds, and cultivated it well, and in the fall of 1621, they had their first harvest.

1621년 청교도들은 신대륙에서 처음으로 하나님께 추수감사절 예배를 처음으로 드리게 된다. 첫 곡식과 채소 중 최고로 좋은 것만 모아서 하나님께 감사드렸고, 허락하신 곡식으로 만든 칠면조 요리, 감자, 옥수수 요리 등을 나누어 먹으며, 미국 원주민들과도 함께 음식을 나누어 먹었다. 하나님께 감사드리며 이웃과 그 감사를 나누는 것이 바로 추수감사절의 전통으로서 우리가 기억해야할 그 뿌리이다.

In 1621, the Puritans were the first to hold a Thanksgiving service in the New World. They gathered only the best of the first grains and vegetables and gave thanks to God. They shared turkey, potatoes, and corn dishes made from the grains that God had given them, and they also shared the food with Native Americans. Giving thanks to God and sharing that gratitude with neighbors is the root of the Thanksgiving tradition that we must remember.

성경 말씀은 좋기도 하지만 지키기에 참으로 어렵습니다. 살전5:16-18절입니다. “항상 기뻐하라, 쉬지 말고 기도하라, 범사에 감사하라 이것이 그리스도 예수 안에서 너희를 향하신 하나님의 뜻이니라.” 사실 항상 기뻐하기가 힘듭니다. 그런데 쉬지 말고 기도하라고 하십니다. 쉬지 말고 기도하기도 힘든데, 범사에 감사하라고 하십니다. 불가능해 보이지만, 쉬지 말고 기도하면 가능합니다.

The Bible is good, but it is really hard to keep. 1 Thes.5:16-18 says, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” It is actually hard to be joyful all the time. But God tells us to pray without ceasing. It is hard to pray without ceasing, but God tells us to be thankful in all things. It may seem impossible, but it is possible if we pray without ceasing.

빌4:6,7절은 말씀합니다. “6.아무 것도 염려하지 말고 다만 모든 일에 기도와 간구로, 너희 구할 것을 감사함으로 하나님께 아뢰라. 7.그리하면 모든 지각에 뛰어난 하나님의 평강이 그리스도 예수 안에서 너희 마음과 생각을 지키시리라.” 기도는 감사함으로 하는 것입니다. 감사함으로 기도하면 기뻐할 수 있습니다. 감사기도의 끝은 기쁨입니다. 그래서 쉬지 말고 기도하고 모든 일(범사)에 감사 기도하면서 항상 기뻐할 수 있습니다.

Philippians 4:6-7 says, “6.Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7.And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Prayer is done with thanksgiving. If you pray with thanksgiving, you can be joyful. The end of thanksgiving prayer is joy. So, if you pray without ceasing and pray with thanksgiving in all things, you can always be joyful.

바울은 불가능한 것을 권면하지 않았습니다. 그는 성령 안에서 쉬지 않고 기도했고, 모든 일에 감사를 고백했고, 항상 기쁘게 사역했습니다. 이것이 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나님의 뜻입니다(18). 우리 모두 쉬지 말고 기도함으로써 어떠한 환경 가운데서도 하나님을 기쁘시게 하기를 바랍니다. 그리하여 그 마음에 항상 기쁨을 소유하시기 바랍니다. 그리고 모든 일 가운데 감사할 수 있으시길 바랍니다.

Paul did not advise the impossible. He prayed without ceasing in the Holy Spirit, confessed thanks in everything, and served joyfully at all times. This is the will of God in Christ Jesus (18). May we all pray without ceasing and please God in any situation. May we always have joy in our hearts. And may we be thankful in all things.

바울은 데살로니가 교회를 생각할 때 풍성한 감사가 있었습니다(1:3, 2:13, 3:9, 5:18). 오늘 데살로니가전서에 나타난 바울의 감사를 들으면서 주님의 음성으로 듣고 감사하며 사시길 축원합니다.

Paul had abundant thanks when he thought of the church in Thessalonica (1:3, 2:13, 3:9, 5:18). As we listen to Paul’s thanks in 1 Thessalonians today, I hope you will hear the voice of the Lord, be thankful, and live.

감사는 우리의 신앙상태를 측정할 수 있는 기준이다. Thank you!’는 참 좋은 말이다. 옆 사람에게 한 번 해 봅시다. “감사합니다.” 감사에 세 가지가 있다.

Gratitude is a standard that can measure our state of faith. ‘Thank you!’ is such a good word. Let’s say it to someone next to us. “Thank you.” There are three types of gratitude.

첫째는 'if의 감사, ''∼하면 감사하겠습니다'하는 조건적인 감사이다. 둘째는 'because of ', ‘- 때문에 감사합니다’ 하는 당연한 감사이다. 셋째는 'in spite of', '-에도 불구하고'의 감사이다. 도저히 감사할 조건이 아닌데 감사하는 것이다. 오늘 본문의 감사는 바로 셋째 감사이다. '범사에 감사하라. 어떤 상황에서든 감사하라'고 말씀하신다. The first is ‘if gratitude,’ a conditional gratitude that says, ‘I would be grateful if you do ∼.’ The second is ‘because of,’ a natural gratitude that says, ‘Thank you because of ∼.’ The third is ‘in spite of,’ a gratitude that says, ‘Despite ∼.’ It is gratitude that is not a condition for gratitude at all. The gratitude in today’s text is precisely the third type of gratitude. It says, ‘Be thankful in all circumstances. Be thankful in any situation.’

구약시대 하박국 선지자를 보라(3:17-19). 그는 당시의 경제 상황을 본다. 무화과나무 잎이 없다. 포도 열매도 없다. 감람나무의 소출도 없다. 먹을 것도 없다. 소와 양도 없다. 그는 모두 없어도 하나님께 감사한다.

Look at the prophet Habakkuk in the Old Testament (3:17-19). He sees the economic situation at that time. There are no fig leaves. There are no grapes. There is no produce from the olive tree. There is nothing to eat. There are no cattle or sheep. Even though he has nothing, he is thankful to God.
