Mt. 28:1-10, Jesus' resurrection, my resurrection, our resurrection

1.After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.
2.There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.
3.His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.
4.The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.
5.The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.
6.He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.
7.Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you."
8.So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples.    9.Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him.    10.Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me."

1. A Life Heading Toward the Tomb with Sorrowful Steps(v.1)
The women who lost their beloved Lord walked toward the tomb with heavy steps, filled with a sense of loss and despair. We, too, often walk through the "tombs" of our reality due to pain, failure, and fear. However, what matters is that even in their sorrow, these women moved toward Jesus. In moments of despair, do not stop; instead, move toward the place of worship and prayer.

Reflection: What steps of sorrow and pain am I walking through these days? Are those steps leading me toward Jesus?
Application: When you feel discouraged, do not stop; instead, press forward to the place of worship and prayer.
Resolution: I resolve to draw near to the Lord, even amidst my sorrow. ????

2. Transformation When God Rolls Away the Stone(vv. 2-7)
God rolled away the massive stone in front of the tomb, something impossible for human strength. Resurrection is the event where God removes the stones that block our way. The angel proclaimed victory over the power of death, saying, "He is not here; he has risen!" Entrust the "stones" of despair and sin that block your life to God. The Lord has risen, just as He promised.

Reflection: What is the stone blocking the path of my life?
Application: Do not try to resolve it on your own; entrust it to God. Place your trust in the power of the Resurrection.
Resolution: I will believe that God will roll away the stone in my life. ✨

3. A Life of Joyfully Running to Spread the Resurrection(vv.8-10)
Upon confirming the empty tomb, the women’s sorrow turned into "great joy," and they began to run to tell the disciples the news. While they were running, the risen Jesus met them personally, asking, "Greetings (Peace be with you)," and comforted them. The joy of the resurrection is experienced more vividly by those who are running toward their mission rather than those who remain stationary.

Reflection: Am I living a life that shares the joy of the Resurrection?
Application: Share the hope of the Resurrection with at least one person. Joy multiplies when it is shared.
Resolution: I will live my life not with sorrowful steps, but with a joyful stride. ????️

Example/ This is the story of a minister enduring the darkest period of his life. The ministry he had spent years preparing for collapsed due to unforeseen circumstances. The colleagues who had served alongside him left, one by one. His health deteriorated as well. Amidst all this, his mother passed away. What was most agonizing of all was God’s silence. He offered up early morning prayers every day. With a heart heavy with frustration, he fasted and cried out: “God, why is this happening? What have I done wrong? Please, speak to me.” Yet, there was no response—not a single word.
Like the women in our scripture passage, he was walking sorrowfully toward a tomb. He believed that all hope was dead; he had lost his faith in the resurrection. One day, while riding in his car after barely managing to complete his ministry duties, he muttered to himself: “It’s over now. Neither life nor ministry holds any meaning anymore.”
However, it was precisely during this time of despair—the darkest hour of his life—that God came to find this minister. One day, lacking even the strength to pray, he simply opened his Bible. At that moment, a single verse of Scripture entered his soul like a brilliant beam of light. It was Romans 4:17: “God gives life to the dead and calls into existence things that do not exist.” Instantly, the Holy Spirit granted his heart a profound realization. As Romans 4:17 declares, even a being struck down by death can be brought back to life by God’s hand, and even in a place of utter emptiness, God’s work can bring forth miracles. It was because he believed this truth that Abraham became the father of faith, and that Jesus, after walking the path of the cross, was able to joyfully embrace the resurrection. As this truth from the Scripture dawned upon him, he suddenly recalled the very last words his mother had spoken just before she passed away. "My son, continue to live faithfully and nobly as a servant of God, just as you are doing now. It seems I will soon be departing from this earth. Do not grieve too deeply. We shall meet again soon in Heaven." Standing before the Word of God and recalling his mother’s final words, the minister wept uncontrollably. Yet, these were not tears of sorrow, but tears of profound realization and repentance. Following that realization, something within him—something that had crumbled—began to rise again. His circumstances remained bleak; nothing on the surface had changed. But his heart had changed. The eyes that had been fixed on the grave were transformed into eyes that looked toward the Resurrection. As time passed, he underwent a gradual transformation and was blessed to meet new fellow laborers in the ministry. And today, he continues to carry out his ministry with unwavering faithfulness—living, above all else, as a preacher who powerfully proclaims the transforming power of the Resurrection.

Conclusion/ Even in the darkest night of life, God is at work. Trust in the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not. Let us stop the sorrowful steps that linger in front of the tomb and become believers who begin a joyful run of hope with the risen Lord.

Prayer/ God of Resurrection and Eternal Life. May the resurrection of Jesus not be merely a past event, but become my resurrection and our resurrection. Like the women who sought the tomb with sorrowful steps, there are many times when discouragement and fear fill our hearts. However, allow us to encounter the Lord who moved the stone and rose again, so that our sorrow may turn into joy. Through the power of Jesus' resurrection, may our dead hope come alive, may my life be renewed, and may we experience a resurrection where our church rises together. Now, may we stop our sorrowful steps and become witnesses proclaiming the Lord with a joyful run, and may we live with joy instead of fear. I pray in the name of the risen Jesus Christ. Amen.
