Mark 5:21-24, 35-43 “Talitha koum!” (“Little girl, I say to you, get up!”)

When we meet Jesus, miracles happen. He restores our health. He turns sorrow into hope. He raises the dead. In Mark 5, there is a story of Jairus, one of the synagogue leaders, whose little daughter has just died. It was devastating news. But Jesus came to Jairus’ home. He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). He raised a dead girl. Though we live in a world of despair, how can we experience this miracle of Talitha koum?

First, come to Jesus, cast all your anxiety on Him, and plead with Him (vv.22-24).

Jairus was a man of high standing, well-known religious leader, and a ruler in the synagogue in Capernaum. However, when his little daughter was dying, he came to Jesus and fell at his feet. He pleaded earnestly with Jesus and said, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” His name, Jairus meant, “God enlightens, let the light shine.” However, he could not live up to his name. He looked to Jesus to let His light shine. Jairus put his hope only in Jesus. Jairus was not concerned about his dignity or reputation. He came to Jesus, fell at his feet, and pleaded earnestly with Him. There may be times we experience despair and sorrow in life. Come to the LORD, fall on your knees, and plead with Him with urgency and pray for salvation.

Second, overcome obstacles with patience (vv.24-25).

Mark 5:24 states that Jesus went with Jairus. But there was a problem, an obstacle. There was a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. She came up behind Jesus, touched his cloak, and sought healing from Jesus. Jairus’ urgent request is delayed because of this incident. God tests Jairus’ patience. In the Old Testament, Abraham faced obstacles in the midst of waiting for God’s promise to be fulfilled. Hagar, his Egyptian slave, bore Abraham a son, Ishmael. Rather than patiently waiting, Abraham listened to Sarah, his wife and agreed to what she said. Abraham waited 13 years patiently, and then Sarah bore him a son, Isaac. When we wait on God, He will give us good gifts. Jairus is probably glad that he patiently waited for Jesus and overcame obstacles. I pray that God will help us overcome obstacles and challenges and help us wait on Him patiently.

Third, trust God even in difficult times (vv.35-43).

In Mark 5:34, some people came from the house of Jairus and told him that his daughter was dead. It was the worst thing that just happened to him. Things seemed impossible and hopeless now that she died. But Jesus, even though he overheard what they said, he still told Jairus, “Don’t be afraid, just believe” in verse 36. Fear weakens our faith. But faith drives out fear. When we are in despair, God starts working in our lives. When Joseph heard that Mary, who was pledged to be married to him was already pregnant, it was the worst thing that could happen to him. How could this happen before they came together? But Joseph put his trust in the LORD. He was a righteous man who believed the LORD. Joseph’s name is recorded in the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah. Matthew 1:16 writes, “and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.” In Mark 5:38-39, Jesus said to people who were crying and waiting loudly because Jairus’ daughter died, “Why all this commotion and waiting? The child is not dead but asleep.” But people laughed at him because the child was dead for sure. When we believe in Jesus who is the resurrection and the life, even though we die, we will live. When Jesus returns, He will awake us and raise us from the dead.

*A mother’s farewell to her sons-She said, “Good night!” to one of her sons, and “Good bye!” to her younger son that believed in Jesus and went to heaven. Death is “Good night!” We will see each other and meet again.

* Peter Marshall’s testimony-“Honey, see you again tomorrow morning.”

In Mark 5:41, Jesus took the child by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “little girl, I say to you, get up!”). Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around. Everyone was completely astonished. He told them to give her something to eat. This was an amazing miracle of revival and restoration. We can rise again. We can walk again. When Jesus speaks, we can rise up and overcome adversity. In Ezekiel 37, Ezekiel witnesses the dry bones in the valley coming to life and standing up to their feet when they heard the Word of the LORD. God speaks life. God’s Word gives life. There is power in the Word of God. Come to Jesus in times of despair and plead with Him. Overcome obstacles with patience and wait on Him. I pray that you will experience Talitha koum miracle as you trust and believe in Jesus even in difficult times.
