Mt 6:9-13 Hallowed be Your name (Lord's Prayer #2)
From today's passage, "Hallowed be thy name " is the first of the seven petitions in the prayer. It also means,
"let your name be hallowed," its related to Holy, sacred. Meaning, God's name stands for itself. God himself is already Holy. He should be recognized and treated as Holy. Here the meaning of His name includes, his personality, existence, characteristics and power and the almighty itself. Therefore, we have to make a commitment to live to glorify his name thru our transcended lives as a child who belongs to him. Hallowed be thy name as I glorify His name by the way I live and draw us to his loving, kindness. We will look at the three aspects of today's scripture:
1. What is the name of God?
1) El or Elohim, means God the Creator, the Almighty God. Jacob called God, Elohim and experienced amazing transformation and committed his life to Almighty God.(Gn. 43:14)
2) Jehovah, Yahweh, God revealed his name to Moses as Jehovah" ‘I am who I am" (Exodus 3:14), ①Jehovah Yiira- God who prepares our needs ② Rapha- healer ③ Nissi- Our flag, Victory ④ Shalom:- God of peace , ⑤ Jehovah tsidkenu - Righteous God (Jeremiah 23:6) Jehovah-Chatsahi- Lord my Strength Psalm 27:1 ⑥ Roi -my Shepherd ⑦ Shammah -The Lord is there
2. What does "Hallowed be Your name" mean?
"Hallowed" has to do with the holiness of God. Some commentators argue that it is better to understand this line as "may (or let) our name be holy". When we pray this line we are recognizing the nature of God as holy and distinct from us. This will lead us to walk more closely with our Creator and the development of holiness in ourselves, mirroring the nature of God: (John Calvin says it means " He, God must be glorified and is the only one to be glorified. It also means that we praise him, worship him and exalt him.)
3. How can you show that "Hallowed be Your name"?
1) We have to give thanks to God: Apostle Paul " I can do all this through him who gives me strength." He gave thanks to God for everything.(Phil 4:13) , “But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me( 1Cor15:10),
2) Fear only God: “ And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him."(Heb 11:6), “You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, .” (Exodus.20:5).
3) Glorify to God: We have to acknowledge his precious name and glorify his name. “Not to us, Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness. .”(Psalm 115:1,) “He must become greater; I must become less ” John the baptist , He only wanted to glorify God's name not his name.
